YOU ARE BORN
This video was an entry for Project Reason's 2012 Video Contest.
Project Reason is a nonprofit foundation devoted to spreading scientific knowledge and secular values in society.
I have strong scientific values, and making this video for the contest seemed like a great way to share them.
My opinion is this: more often than not, transparency and openness with knowledge and ideas benefits everyone involved. Any community that forces its members not to ask questions, not to engage in free thinking, and not to question the "authority figures" is arguably worse off than a community who is open. Ideas that include the rule "you're not allowed to criticize my idea" anywhere within their structure are simply naive. Open discussion and sharing within communities should be encouraged strongly.
Communities are vital to our society as it stands. The rules that we use to govern them are important- any increase in their effectiveness will result in the betterment of all. I think that all rationale should allow for criticism, and I encourage criticism of this point as well.
The video did not make the final cut within the Project Reason contest, so perhaps this idea needs a little more development. Nevertheless, I am happy with the result, and I will continue to share it with others! :D
For the creation of the video, I sampled a lot of archive footage. There's a few cool instances of visual metaphor within the video that I like:
00:14 - a bird flying cuts to a plane doing the same over the words "you learn"
00:38 - "you become empty" shows an empty screen
00:47 - "you take just a peek" the girl's smiling but bashful face is priceless
00:57 - "you have to make a decision" ...I think we all have felt the inevitability of the wave before.
I spent a lot of time debating the the final shot. I thought that the overall rush of takeoff most aptly described "enlightenment."
Questions are welcome. :)
